The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre awards scholarships as a means of encouraging participation in our courses and to offset costs that might prevent candidates from attending. The size of the scholarship is negotiable, depending on the circumstances of each individual candidate. The Centre expects participants, or the institutions where they may be employed, to contribute. However, a full scholarship may be awarded where the situation warrants.

For courses at our Cornwallis campus, the cost of transportation to the Halifax airport is not included in the scholarship programme, and must be borne by the participant. However, the Centre provides transportation free of charge from the Halifax airport to Cornwallis.

Applications for a scholarship should be forwarded to the Registrar at [email protected]. You should include a current CV, a completed course application form and a letter outlining your reason for requesting a scholarship and the level of support needed. Scholarship applications must be received no later than six (6) weeks before the start of the course. Scholarships are specific to a given course and can not be transferred to other PPC courses or activities.

Scholarship and Award Criteria

Scholarships are awarded for both the Foundation and Advanced courses, and applicants must meet all the criteria required for the course before being considered for a scholarship.

Successful applicants for scholarships also usually meet the following criteria:

  • Education - You have a university degree or equivalent education and/or experience;
  • Background - Your professional background, career objectives or a pending field assignment are related to the course subject matter. You are also in a position to influence others positively and to create a larger benefit to your organization/group/field mission as a result of the training;
  • Personal Effort - You have actively pursued other sources of funding to help defer part of the cost of tuition; and
  • Affiliation - If you are an employee or member of an organization, the Centre expects that the organization will contribute, and will consider the level of support that it can reasonably provide.

Suggestions for Supplementing a Scholarship

It can be difficult for candidates to find funding for education and training in the field of peace operations. The following suggestions may be helpful in your search:

Obtain your employer’s support - Some organizations have professional development programmes that cover all or part of education and training costs, as well as travel.

Secure external funding - You or your organization can solicit funds from other funding agencies, foundations and international organizations. Funding might be obtained from:

  • Donors who already help fund your organization’s programmes;
  • International foundations or organizations already linked with your field of interest and/or your organization; or
  • Private foundations in your region that can provide assistance such as educational grants or scholarships.

Identify sources of personal funding - Candidates may be required to cover all or part of tuition costs from their own resources as an investment in their long-term career possibilities.

Decisions on applications are made by the Scholarship Committee. The Registrar will advise candidates on the status of their application prior to the start of the course.
