The Montréal Campus

Mission and Programmes

The Montréal Campus of the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre was established in February 1999, with funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The office was inaugurated on September 21, 1999 by the then Minister, Lloyd Axworthy. Axworthy affirmed the PPC’s contribution to international peace and security:

"Expansion of the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre's activities is vital, especially at a time when Canada is making ongoing efforts to promote a new approach based more on the security of the individual person. Through the quality of training it provides, the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre represents a significant contribution by Canada to making this approach a reality at the national and international levels."

The Montréal Campus responds to a growing interest about peace operations issues among French speakers, in Canada and abroad. The Campus:

  • Offers selected courses from the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre curriculum in both of Canada’s official languages, English and French;
  • Hosts lectures, seminars and events on peace operations issues;
  • Promotes dialogue between academics, policymakers and practitioners; and
  • Provides media commentary and analysis on current events.
Facilities

The Montréal Campus is located at the École nationale d’administration publique [Quebec School of Public Administration]. In addition to its own classroom, meeting rooms and office space, the Montréal Campus has access to facilities for groups of up to 300 persons. It also enjoys full access to Pearson Peacekeeping Centre resources, including our extensive Library facilities.

Location

The Campus is located in the heart of Montréal’s Latin Quarter, only a few blocks away from the Université du Québec à Montréal, McGill University, and close to the Mont Royal and Laurier metro stations. Theatres, libraries, bookstores, cafés and restaurants make this one of the best-known and attractive neighbourhoods in Canada. Participants taking part in activities at the Montréal campus can easily combine work, study and opportunities to enjoy the culture and sights of Montréal. www.tourisme-montreal.org

Special Activities

The Montréal campus hosts one of the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre’s largest programme initiatives: The Peacekeeping and Security Capacity-Building Project for Francophone Africa (PDCMPS) http://www.pdcmps.ca/eng/index.html. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funds the PDCMPS. Its goal is to build the capacity of countries in Francophone Africa to manage and resolve violent conflict. Specific objectives include:

  • Strengthening peace operations education and training institutions in Francophone West Africa, including those working with military, police and civilian personnel;
  • Enhancing the capacity of Francophone African countries to take part in peace operations, in West Africa and internationally; and
  • Promoting human security through reforms to national public security institutions.

The programme will be carried out over a period of four and a half years, ending in 2004. Six activities were delivered between January and June of 2002, and another 15 activities are planned for 2003. The PPC is working with our African counterparts, and other international donors, to ensure that institutions in the region have the capacity to maintain and deliver the courses by the end of the programme.
