Multi-Disciplinary Approach

Since its inception in 1994, the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) has fundamentally supported a multi-disciplinary approach to peace operations. This approach values dialogue and assembles civilians, military personnel and police to learn from one another in a neutral environment. The goal is to make peace operations more effective through cooperation and coordination.

The multi-disciplinary approach is based on Canadian values and is part of the PPC’s training method. It’s also at the heart of the way we run our business: our diverse staff incorporates the viewpoints of academics, civilians, diplomats, military, police, humanitarian organizations and recipient populations.

Around the world, countries like Canada are called upon to mobilize “whole of government” resources to secure and reconstruct failed states. This demands effective – even unprecedented – levels of cooperation among civilians, military and police agencies in this effort. Our researchers play a critical role in this effort by providing a neutral space where these groups can work together and are exploring ideas and initiatives in collaboration with the United Nations, the Canadian government and recipient populations which have experienced international peace operations.
