Senior Management Course (SMC)
The SMC is a 3-week learning opportunity focused on UN Integrated Peace Missions and designed to enhance the operational effectiveness of mission planning. Participants (civilian, military and police) will be introduced to the processes of providing strategic and operational advice in the development phase of a contemporary UN peace operation.
The course is structured around the development of a UN mission and the evolution of mandates. Using Activity/Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activities, participants will solidify their comprehension of this process.
The learning environment is multidisciplinary and appeals to civilians, the military and police who are called upon to plan a UN mission, including implementing partners of UN agencies.
This course provides indispensable insights to a country delegation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that co-habit the work environment.
During the course, participants will deal with cross-cutting issues such as culture, gender and vulnerable groups as well as negotiation and communications skills needed for effective communication in a multidisciplinary environment. As a confirmatory practicum, participants will craft policy advice that will be used in formulating UN Security Council Resolutions and/or policies that underpin activities undertaken by their respective national authorities or agencies.
