Discussing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Burundi

8 décembre 2010

The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre held its opening ceremony for the sexual and gender-based violence seminar just metres from the shores of Lake Tanganyika today in Bujumbura, Burundi. Clad in their baby blue uniforms, 30 Burundian police officers listened to opening speeches given by German Ambassador, Mr. Joseph Weiss, Antoinette Chibi, a Pearson Peacekeeping Centre representative and the General Manager of Operations Coordination, representing the Representative from the Burundi Ministry of Public Safety.

Following those remarks, participants gathered for a group photo on the beach of one of East Africa’s largest lakes, the grey sky in the background indicating the passing of an enormous storm in the midst of
Burundi’s rainy season.

Facilitator Kani kicked off the course with an open discussion about gender and sex, and from there will stem three days of what promises to be interesting conversation and learning.
